Prayer: A Pattern Worth Repeating

We all know Matthew 6:9-13 as “The Lord’s Prayer”. However, do you realize the significance of that passage of Scripture? Do you realize that Jesus has given us explicit and detailed instructions on how we are to pray? Jesus’ opening words “Pray, then, in this way:” tell us that He is giving us instruction on how to pray. I would like to explain all that there is to know about Matthew 6:9-13 here in one post. However, I cannot say that I know all that there is to know about this particular passage. I can, however, reveal that which I have discovered but alas, I cannot do so in a single post. Therefore, I have elected to spread out the truths that I have come to realize regarding this passage and to illustrate those truths by revealing how I arrived at those truths through my methods of Bible Study. In a sense, you will be learning about prayer and Bible study during this series of posts. I have no idea at this time how many posts will be necessary to convey what I consider to be the true meaning of this passage, but I pray that the process will be as enlightening for you as it has been for me. For my purposes, I have chosen the New American Standard Bible translation as it is the most detailed word for word translation that exists. I do use the English Standard Version as well in my studies as well as the King James Version, New King James version and the New Living Translation for my personal reading. I’ll discuss why in a later installment of Bible Study in Daily Living.

Now for the passage at hand.

Matthew 6:9–13 (NASB95)

9 “Pray, then, in this way:

‘Our Father who is in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.

10 ‘Your kingdom come.

Your will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread.

12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]’

It is not difficult to ascertain that there are seven petitions (Seven being the number of being “complete”) within this prayer. Let’s break this down and identify those seven petitions.

1. Hallowed be Your name.

2. Your kingdom come.

3. Your Will be done,

4. Give us this day our daily bread.

5. Forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors.

6. Lead us not into temptation.

7. deliver us from evil

As time moves along, in following posts, we will explore the meanings of these petitions and the meaning of those necessary involvements associated with those meanings. For now, bask in the assurance that when you pray The Lord’s Prayer you are praying in in accordance to Jesus’ instruction. Notice I did not say, “When you SAY The Lord’s Prayer”. I said when you PRAY The Lord’s Prayer. There is a difference. When we are done with this series you will wonder in amazement at the power that has been released within your prayer life! That is how it should be. Pray for an open heart, open eyes, and an open mind. The results, when we are finished, can truly be staggering.
